Victor Hugo and Giuseppe Verdi are two great authors whose creative paths intersect in the opera Rigoletto. Verdi composed the music in 1850 based on Hugo's drama The King is Amused.

Because of its ironic political overtones, the text caused a scandal in France in the early 1830s, which is why for years the idea of creating an operatic work was attacked by the censors before it was even completed by Verdi. But the famous composer did not give up . He eliminated all historical figures from the production, moving the action from Paris to Mantua, Italy. Instead of a king, in " Rigoletto " the main character becomes the court jester, who is renamed from Tribule to Rigoletto, and so the opera gets its name.

In this production, German director Frank-Bernd Gottschalk takes the action from the 16th century to the 1960s, in the style of Federico Fellini's films.
